Our story

Home  /  About us  /  Our story

Our story started with just one. His name was Matt.

In 2001, Matt Wardlaw died from suicide. This intelligent, creative and beautiful soul was just 32 years old.

Matt's family and friends were inspired to take positive action and establish a fundraising group to support medical research into mental illness. One in Five was named in honour of Matt as one of five siblings, and to highlight that one in five Australians experience mental ill health every year.

Since 2003, One in Five events and campaigns have raised over $4 million. And more than 20 years on, we remain committed to raising hope by funding much needed scientific research into causes, treatments and cures

for mental illness.
